What should you do if your hair extensions get tangled?

14 March 2018

Generally speaking, high-quality Remy human hair tangles much less than cheap non-Remy human hair. Cheap hair extension products are treated with harsh chemicals during processing, which damages the cuticle layer. These hair products are then immersed in a silicone bath to restore their shine and suppleness. After a few washes, however, this silicone coating peels away from the hair, leaving it brittle, fragile, tangled, and matted. Important: When choosing extensions, it is therefore essential to ensure you select hair of the highest quality.

More tips for preventing tangled hair extensions:

Regular maintenance trims for hair extensions

If you decide to get extensions, it’s important to schedule regular “maintenance trims.” After about four weeks, have your hairstylist check the attachment points and the extensions and make any necessary adjustments.

Why is a follow-up appointment so important for hair extensions?

On average, a person loses up to 100 strands of hair per day. Normally, these loose hairs are removed from the rest of the hair when combing. However, even with extensions made from Remi human hair, shed hairs can sometimes get caught in the hair or at the attachment points. This issue essentially applies to all extension methods, but is particularly common with bonding extensions. The resulting risk of tangling and damage to your natural hair or the extensions can be prevented with a simple maintenance trim. This involves removing the loose, shed hairs from the attachment points.

The Right Brushes for Your Beautiful Extensions

Using unsuitable brushes for hair care can cause extensions and individual strands to break off. Due to the large number of strands, the hair is more prone to tangling. The right brush material won’t damage the extensions, and your hair will look well-groomed at all times. Before combing, briefly detangle the hair by running your fingertips between the attachment points and the scalp and carefully working your way through the hair to the ends.

Shampoo is also important when caring for extensions.

The Right Shampoo for Extensions

Use a special shampoo to care for your extensions. If your shampoo contains silicones and/or alcohol, you’ll permanently damage your extensions, and tangling will be nearly impossible to avoid.

Alcohol roughens the attachment points and can even damage them. Silicones make the attachment points slippery, causing the extensions to fall out.

BELLA MIDAS offers high-quality hair care products that help ensure the longevity and beauty of your extensions. Tangling is no longer an issue.

Tips After Washing Your Hair

Washing your hair can put a lot of strain on your extensions. People often brush their hair while it’s wet, which leads to breakage and hair loss more quickly. Therefore, brush your hair when it’s dry before washing it.

After washing, we recommend using a detangling spray to untangle your hair. Extensions can be blow-dried or air-dried. Please note that when air-drying, you should briefly blow-dry the attachment points so they provide your extensions with their usual hold.

Sleeping with Extensions

Most people sleep with their hair down. However, if you have hair extensions, it’s best to gently comb through your hair briefly before going to bed and then tie it back. This significantly reduces the risk of matting and tangling. Please use a soft, wide hair tie (without a metal part). Thin, tight hair ties can damage the extensions.

Vacation with Extensions

Always tie your hair back and pin it up when visiting the beach or the swimming pool. Sea salt and chlorine damage the hair. If your hair does get wet, please apply a protective treatment for extensions. This will help regenerate the stressed hair and prevent tangling.

Basic precautions to prevent your extensions from tangling:

  • Before combing, detangle your hair by gently running your fingertips between the attachment points and your scalp, then gently working your way through to the ends.
  • Comb the hair twice a day with a soft brush
  • Schedule a follow-up appointment at Coiffure after about four weeks to have the attachment points checked.
